She was used to using a light-pen and holo projectors, so her overly firm application of the dried out pen made a squeak that rivalled the scratching of the now ancient chalk boards, and the students squirmed in their seats behind her. She heard one whisper, "someone get her some new pens" - did they think she couldn't hear? Vahlen thought back to her own university days, and yes, she couldn't truthfully say that she was any different at the time. She shook the thought from her head. She had to concentrate on the lecture. It was no easy thing, multi universe theory, and without being able to rely on the past forty years of advancement in the field, in particular those leaps made through reverse engineered alien technology, her whole attention was needed to teach effectively. She numbered the four equations, and ringed each number to differentiate it. On the fourth, the luminous green pen squeaked it's last. She snapped on its cap and tossed it into the squat metal bin by the podium desk. She turned to the class and took the measure of them. She spied the rear right door easing shut on quiet pneumatics, suggesting someone had either just arrived, or just left.
